Starting with the Alphabet: A – B – C

1. Μαθησιακοί στόχοι

Γ΄ Δημοτικού

Οι μαθητές θα μπορούν να:

  • αναγνωρίζουν τα γράμματα A, B, C,
  • συνδέουν κεφαλαίο και πεζό γράμμα,
  • αντιστοιχίζουν γράμμα και βασικό ήχο,
  • αναγνωρίζουν απλές λέξεις που αρχίζουν από A, B, C,
  • γράφουν ή αντιγράφουν τα γράμματα.

Ενδεικτικές λέξεις

A – apple, ant
B – ball, book
C – cat, car

2. Common Warm-up – 5΄

Alphabet Hunt

Ο/η εκπαιδευτικός δείχνει γρήγορα εικόνες:

  • apple
  • ball
  • cat
  • dog
  • book
  • ant
  • car

Ρωτά:

What can you see?

Η Δ΄ προσπαθεί να ονομάσει όσες περισσότερες λέξεις μπορεί.

Η Γ΄ απλώς ακούει, παρατηρεί και επαναλαμβάνει.

Στη συνέχεια ο/η εκπαιδευτικός αποκαλύπτει:

A – B – C

και λέει:

Today we are going to work with A, B and C.

3. Presentation for Grade 3 – 8΄

Η εκπαιδευτικός εστιάζει στα τρία γράμματα.

A a

  • δείχνει το γράμμα,
  • προφέρει τον ήχο,
  • δείχνει εικόνες:

apple – ant

B b

ball – book

C c

cat – car

Οι μαθητές της Γ΄:

  • επαναλαμβάνουν,
  • «γράφουν» το γράμμα στον αέρα,
  • σχηματίζουν το γράμμα με το δάχτυλο στο θρανίο,
  • δείχνουν τη σωστή εικόνα.

Τι κάνει παράλληλα η Δ΄;

Η Δ΄ έχει ένα μικρό ABC Challenge Sheet.

Πρέπει να γράψει όσες περισσότερες γνωστές λέξεις μπορεί:

A

B

C

apple

book

cat

...

...

...

Στόχος δεν είναι απλώς να αντιγράψει, αλλά να ανακαλέσει λεξιλόγιο από προηγούμενη μάθηση.

4. Mixed-age Activity – 8΄

Sort the Words

Δημιουργούνται ζευγάρια Γ΄–Δ΄.

Κάθε ζευγάρι παίρνει κάρτες με εικόνες και λέξεις.

Παραδείγματα:

  • apple
  • ant
  • ball
  • book
  • bag
  • cat
  • car
  • cake

Πρέπει να τις τοποθετήσει κάτω από:

A | B | C

Γ΄:

C – cat

Δ΄:

C-A-T. Cat. It's a cat.

Έτσι και οι δύο έχουν ουσιαστικό ρόλο.

5. Differentiated Practice – 10΄

Γ΄ Δημοτικού

Task A – Letter recognition

Circle:

A a
ανάμεσα σε άλλα γράμματα.

Task B – Match

A → apple
B → ball
C → cat

Task C – Trace and write

A a
B b
C c

Task D – Listen and point

Ο/η εκπαιδευτικός λέει:

ball

και οι μαθητές δείχνουν:

B

Δ΄ Δημοτικού

ABC Vocabulary Recycling

Οι μαθητές δουλεύουν με πιο απαιτητικό task.

Task 1 – Add more words

Γράψε δύο ακόμη λέξεις για κάθε γράμμα.

Task 2 – Choose and use

Διάλεξε τρεις λέξεις και φτιάξε προτάσεις.

Παράδειγμα:

I have a blue bag.
I like apples.
The cat is black.

Task 3 – Spelling challenge

Ο/η εκπαιδευτικός ή συμμαθητής λέει:

book

Ο μαθητής:

B-O-O-K

6. Common Game – 7΄

Find Something Beginning With…

Ο/η εκπαιδευτικός λέει:

Find something beginning with B!

Οι μαθητές ψάχνουν:

  • book
  • bag
  • board

Μετά:

Find something beginning with C!

Μπορεί να υπάρχουν classroom cards με:

  • cat
  • car
  • cake

Διαφοροποίηση

Γ΄:

λέει μόνο:

B – book

Δ΄:

λέει:

B is for book. I have a book.

7. Common Production – 4΄

Στον πίνακα δημιουργείται:

OUR ABC WALL

A

apple – ant

B

ball – book – bag

C

cat – car – cake

Γ΄

προσθέτει εικόνες και γράμματα.

Δ΄

προσθέτει λέξεις και μικρές προτάσεις.

Έτσι το τελικό προϊόν είναι κοινό, αλλά η γλωσσική απαίτηση είναι διαφορετική.

8. Exit Ticket – 3΄

Γ΄ Δημοτικού

Ο μαθητής:

  • δείχνει ένα από τα A/B/C,
  • λέει μία λέξη.

π.χ.

B – ball

Δ΄ Δημοτικού

Ο μαθητής:

  • λέει μία λέξη,
  • κάνει spelling ή δημιουργεί μία πρόταση.

π.χ.

C – cat – C-A-T. The cat is black.

9. Γιατί λειτουργεί η ανακύκλωση στη Δ΄

Η Δ΄ δεν «ξανακάνει το αλφάβητο».

Χρησιμοποιεί τα ίδια γράμματα ως αφετηρία για:

  • vocabulary retrieval,
  • spelling,
  • word categorisation,
  • sentence building,
  • oral production.

Άρα έχουμε:

Γ΄: letter → sound → word

ενώ:

Δ΄: letter → word → phrase → sentence

Η κοινή βάση είναι η ίδια, αλλά το γνωστικό και γλωσσικό επίπεδο είναι διαφορετικό.

10. Κεντρική παιδαγωγική αρχή

Στα πρώτα μαθήματα της χρονιάς η πλήρης θεματική συνδιδασκαλία δεν είναι πάντα εφικτή.

Μπορούμε όμως να δημιουργήσουμε κοινό μαθησιακό πλαίσιο με διαφορετικούς στόχους:

Γ΄: first exposure and recognition
Δ΄: retrieval, recycling and extension

Έτσι η Δ΄ δεν περιμένει μέχρι να ολοκληρώσει η Γ΄ το alphabet work, αλλά αξιοποιεί την ίδια γλωσσική βάση σε υψηλότερο επίπεδο.

2ο Σχέδιο Μαθήματος Συνδιδασκαλίας Γ΄–Δ΄ Δημοτικού

Theme: MY SCHOOL

Τάξεις: Γ΄ και Δ΄ Δημοτικού
Διάρκεια: 45 λεπτά (μπορεί να γίνει σε δύο διδακτικές ώρες, συνεχίζοντας και από εκεί που σταματήσαμε)
Οργάνωση: κοινή διδασκαλία + διαφοροποιημένες δραστηριότητες + εργασία στα αντίστοιχα βιβλία
Προσέγγιση: communicative, differentiated, cooperative, mixed-age learning

Υλικό

Γ΄ Δημοτικού: Magic Book 2 – Unit 5: The Animal School, Lesson 1: School is fun
Δ΄ Δημοτικού: English 4th Grade – Unit 1: Back to School

Language focus

schoolbag, pencil, rubber, pencil case, notebook, book, board

What's this?
It's a pencil.
Where is my pencil?
Here it is.
Take your notebook.

Δ΄ Δημοτικού

Οι μαθητές αναμένεται να μπορούν να:

  • χρησιμοποιούν μεγαλύτερο εύρος λεξιλογίου για σχολικούς χώρους και αντικείμενα,
  • περιγράφουν απλά την τάξη ή το σχολείο τους,
  • χρησιμοποιούν there is / there are,
  • δίνουν απλές πληροφορίες για το σχολείο.

Language focus

classroom, library, playground, computer room, teachers' room, school subjects

There is a library in my school.
There are twelve desks in my classroom.
Our classroom is on the first floor.
My favourite school subject is…

Πορεία μαθήματος

1. Common Warm-up – 5΄

“What's in my schoolbag?”

Ο/η εκπαιδευτικός δείχνει ή βγάζει από μία σχολική τσάντα αντικείμενα:

pencil – rubber – notebook – book – pencil case.

Ρωτά:

What's this?

Η Γ΄ μπορεί να απαντά:

A pencil!

Η Δ΄ ενθαρρύνεται να χρησιμοποιεί ολοκληρωμένες προτάσεις:

It's a pencil. It's in the schoolbag.

Σκοπός

Όλοι εργάζονται στο ίδιο λεξιλόγιο, αλλά με διαφορετικό επίπεδο παραγωγής.

2. Common Presentation – 8΄

Στον πίνακα εμφανίζεται μια εικόνα σχολείου και μια εικόνα τάξης.

Ο/η εκπαιδευτικός παρουσιάζει έναν κοινό λεξιλογικό πυρήνα:

school – classroom – teacher – pupils – board – desk – book – schoolbag

και προσθέτει για τη Δ΄:

library – playground – computer room – teachers' room

Χρησιμοποιεί ερωτήσεις δύο επιπέδων.

Προς τη Γ΄

Where is the board?
Show me the schoolbag.
What's this?

Προς τη Δ΄

What can you see in the classroom?
Is there a board?
How many desks are there?
What rooms are there in your school?

Έτσι η αφόρμηση είναι κοινή αλλά η γλωσσική απαίτηση διαφοροποιείται.

3. Mixed-age Cooperative Activity – 8΄

“Build our classroom”

  • χρησιμοποιούν there is / there are.

Παράδειγμα

Γ΄:

Board.
A desk.
The book is here.

Δ΄:

There is a board in the classroom.
There are four desks.
The schoolbag is under the desk.

Βασική αρχή

Ο μαθητής της Δ΄ δεν «διδάσκει» τον μαθητή της Γ΄. Και οι δύο έχουν διαφορετική αλλά απαραίτητη συμβολή στο κοινό task.

4. Differentiated Book Work – 12΄

Σε αυτό το σημείο χρησιμοποιούνται τα δύο διαφορετικά βιβλία για εμπέδωση.

Γ΄ Δημοτικού – Magic Book 2

Unit 5: The Animal School – Lesson 1 “School is fun”

Οι μαθητές δουλεύουν επιλεγμένες δραστηριότητες του βιβλίου γύρω από τα school things.

Μπορούν:

  • να εντοπίσουν τα σχολικά αντικείμενα στις εικόνες,
  • να ακούσουν/διαβάσουν επιλεγμένα σημεία της ιστορίας,
  • να κάνουν τη δραστηριότητα “Can you find the school things?”,
  • να αντιστοιχίσουν λέξεις και αντικείμενα.

Το βιβλίο της Γ΄ χρησιμοποιεί ακριβώς λέξεις όπως schoolbag, pencil, rubber, pencil case, notebook, board και διαθέτει δραστηριότητα εντοπισμού των school things.

Fast finishers

Ζωγραφίζουν το schoolbag τους και γράφουν 3–4 λέξεις:

book – pencil – rubber – notebook

Δ΄ Δημοτικού – Unit 1: Back to School

Οι μαθητές χρησιμοποιούν το αντίστοιχο μέρος της ενότητας για:

  • classroom/school vocabulary,
  • περιγραφή του σχολείου,
  • school rooms,
  • there is / there are.

Το Unit 1 της Δ΄ προβλέπει ρητά ως στόχους την περιγραφή σχολείου και τάξης και περιλαμβάνει τα lessons “A new student in class”, “My timetable” και “This is my school”.

Task

Οι μαθητές συμπληρώνουν 3–4 προτάσεις:

There is __________ in my school.
There are __________ classrooms.
My classroom has __________.
My favourite place at school is __________.

5. Teacher Rotation

Η Γ΄ συνεχίζει με matching/drawing/word recognition.

Ο/η εκπαιδευτικός μετακινείται στη Δ΄ και υποστηρίζει:

  • there is / there are,
  • περιγραφή σχολείου,
  • ολοκλήρωση προτάσεων.

6. Common Production – 7΄

“Our School”

Όλοι επιστρέφουν στην ολομέλεια.

Στον πίνακα δημιουργείται ένα μικρό κοινό poster:

OUR SCHOOL

Οι μαθητές της Γ΄ προσθέτουν:

  • εικόνες,
  • labels,
  • school objects.

π.χ.

desk – board – book – pencil

Οι μαθητές της Δ΄ προσθέτουν προτάσεις:

There are ten desks in our classroom.

There is a playground in our school.

Our school has a library.

Έτσι δημιουργείται ένα κοινό προϊόν με διαφορετικό επίπεδο συνεισφοράς.

7. Exit Ticket – 5΄

Ο κάθε μαθητής απαντά σύμφωνα με το επίπεδό του.

Γ΄

Δείχνει ή λέει:

Three school things I know:

  1.

  1.

  1.

ή απαντά προφορικά:

What's this?

Δ΄

Ολοκληρώνει:

In my school there is __________.

In my classroom there are __________.

Διαμορφωτική αξιολόγηση

Γ΄ Δημοτικού

Ο μαθητής:

✓ αναγνωρίζει βασικά school objects
✓ αντιστοιχίζει λέξη και εικόνα

“Languages unite!” Celebrate the European Day of Languages with ECML!

Information from the

European Language Gazette
No. 76 – EDL edition 2026

A special year deserves a special celebration! The 26th edition of the European Day of Languages takes place on 26 September 2026, giving us plenty of “26s” to celebrate. With the official date falling on a Saturday, language-themed events are already starting next week and will continue well into the following one, offering a vibrant, Europe-wide celebration of linguistic diversity and the joy of learning languages.

This year’s motto, “Languages unite!”, highlights the important role languages play in bringing people together, fostering curiosity about other cultures, and helping to bridge linguistic and cultural divides. For 2026 we are offering a fresh set of creative challenges, new resources, competitions, posters, games as well as a showcase for the events taking place in celebration of languages.

New resources for teachers and learners

A range of new and updated resources is being developed for the European Day of Languages website. These include a Call to action for teacher educators and teachers building on last year’s Motivation Manifesto.

New posters for EDL 2026

Two new downloadable posters are available for this year’s European Day of Languages. The “Things you may not

know about languages” poster series will continue, this time placing the spotlight on sign languages – with special

thanks to the members of the ECML DeafSign project for their invaluable contribution.

The second poster will showcase a selection of amusing idioms from across Europe. Influenced by the summer heat

– and probably also the ups and downs of the World Cup – it explores the many colourful ways in which different

languages express the idea of someone “going a little crazy”. From the countless possibilities available, we have

selected a variety of particularly memorable examples and brought them together under the title “Amusing idioms…

one sandwich short of a picnic”.https://edl.ecml.at/posters

EDL activity kit

An activity kit for the 2026 European Day of Languages, based on a concept developed by Luxembourg’s

Institut National des Langues. This practical kit is bursting with ideas for activities to use for this year’s EDL

– no teacher should be without one!

https://edl.ecml.at/EDLkit

Word of the year

This feature showcases words from a variety of languages that  have been designated as “words of the year” by

publishers and other media channels in different European countries.  These tend to reflect key events or changes

(both positive and negative) which have occurred over the past year.Visitors to the site will also be invited to propose

their “Word of the year” for 2026.

https://edl.ecml.at/wordoftheyear

Name it! – The language proficiency game

Give your vocabulary a quick workout! Test your vocabulary, challenge your memory, and explore words

across multiple languages. A fun and simple way to refresh and expand your everyday language skills.

Choose a category, select the language you want to explore, and see if you can remember the word

before time runs out. After a few seconds, the correct expression appears – You can however beat the

clock by clicking on the image and pausing the timer so that you can continue at your own pace

Linguine – The language board game

https://edl.ecml.at/edlboardgame

“Linguine” is a fun and educational board game that invites players to explore Europe’s rich linguistic and

cultural diversity. Based on feedback from users, the game has been enhanced and the 'MKII' Linguine is now

available  in both ‘beginner’ and ‘advanced’ versions, offering an even wider range of questions and challenges

Language games and resources

A rich palette of language games is also available. Try out some of the following:

  • a brain game to test out your skills and your memory with the Latin and Greek alphabets – https://edl.ecml.at/braingame;
  • “How many languages do you recognize?”, where you can test your ability to correctly identify
  • written texts in up to 40 languages – https://edl.ecml.at/languagedetective;
  • a “Where am I?” game, where you need to identify which country is represented in a picture
  • – from the linguistic clues visible – https://edl.ecml.at/WhereAmI;
  • the “Which language is it?” game which tests the listener’s ability to identify individual languages
  •  through listening to conversations in an everyday setting. This game really certainly sharpens
  • listening skills            – https://edl.ecml.at/whichlanguage;
  • an updated “Famous quotes” section: including a variety of quotations from different languages
  •  and their origins – https://edl.ecml.at/quotes.

Motivation and language teacher education: a Call to action

Every language-learning journey begins with motivation. The Call to action, developed by a joint ECML

-European Commission working group, explores why motivation matters for language teachers and

language teacher education and calls for renewed action in this area. The full text will be launched during

a dedicated webinar on 22 September. Discover more below:

Lara’s language journey continues — this time to Italy!

Italy is the next stop on Lara’s linguistic adventure! After encountering more than 80 European languages on her

travels so far, she is ready to discover even more of Europe’s rich language heritage. Along the way, she will

encounter Italy’s remarkable language diversity, enjoy its famous coffee and art, and uncover plenty of surprising

linguistic treasures. The new booklet will be available in English and French from 21 September.

EDL Initiatives: how to get involved!

The 2026 EDL class language challenge initiative

Invite your class to complete a series of short, fun language missions and join thousands of students

across Europe in celebrating linguistic diversity. By submitting a simple piece of evidence, your class will

receive an official EDL Challenge Certificate.

In 2026, we aim to make the initiative bigger than ever by encouraging as many students as possible to

take part at the same time – potentially setting a new record for the largest language challenge ever

organised. The activity can be carried out using the “Create your own language challenge” tool.

Are you ready to take on the EDL 2026 Language Challenge?

https://edl.ecml.at/challenge2026

“Languages unite!” poster initiative

Schools and learners are invited to create a poster illustrating the theme “Languages unite!”.

Posters can use artwork, symbols and quotations to illustrate how languages bring people together

and help reach across linguistic and cultural divides. The most creative entries will receive prizes,

and 25 selected posters will proudly decorate the walls of the European Centre for Modern Languages.

All about EDL events!

The European Day of Languages offers an opportunity to raise awareness of all the languages represented in

today’s Europe. It is a celebration of Europe’s unique linguistic context and an impetus for people of all ages and

walks of life to also learn to communicate, (and be understood!) in a language in addition to their own.

Around the Day thousands of events take place, often dealing with very different topics and audiences but with

the same inherent premise – to encourage language learning.

EDL events calendar

We warmly welcome event organisers to enter details of their activities from all around Europe and

indeed the world into the EDL calendar – https://edl.ecml.at/edlcalendar. By doing so, they will also

be able to download an official event certificate.

Each day, throughout the month of September, a particularly special event will be showcased on the

homepage of the EDL website – https://edl.ecml.at.

Virtual event of the European Commission

The European Commission will be celebrating the European Day of Languages with a virtual event on

30 September – and you are invited! This year’s theme will be “Languages unite! How languages

shape inclusion”.

Register now to get access to the virtual exhibition and join the debate on how multilingualism can

empower learners, strengthen democracy and contribute to inclusion.

You will be able to create your own avatar and explore virtual stands (including the ECML’s!) on language

learning and teaching, interpretation, translation, and beyond.

Check out the website for the full programme.

Graz language festival

On 25 September 2026, the Graz language festival will celebrate the European Day of Languages,

highlighting the city’s linguistic diversity as well as 25 years of Graz as a City of Human Rights. From

9 am to 6 pm, visitors can take part in workshops and interactive activity stalls, go on language-themed

city walks and enjoy a wide range of artistic performances.

The event will also be streamed via the page: https://sprachennetzwerkgraz.at/Grazer-Sprachenfest.

New storybooks

We are pleased to announce a new series of children’s books inspired by the European Day of Languages.

The bilingual Croatian-English storybooks "Dabar Joža" (Joe the Beaver) are written by Ljiljana Kolar,

Croatia’s National Relay for the European Day of Languages, together with her colleague Andreja Mrazović.

Through the adventures of a friendly beaver, young readers explore local heritage, nature, traditions and

cultural landmarks, while developing a love of reading and an interest in learning English. In Croatia,

the stories are complemented by educational workshops, school visits and a range of learning materials

tailored to primary school children, helping to bring the books and their themes to life in engaging and

interactive ways.
