 Abstract 

The present study investigates individual bilingualism of second-generation Albanian, immigrants in Greece. More specifically, it investigates the linguistic impact of migration and the phenomena of language maintenance and shift based on the example of Albanian immigrant, primary school students in Greece. The data collected was based on interviews through which the participants’ linguistic biographies were elicited and from recordings of informal communication among them. The aim of the present study is to identify the participants’ patterns of communication in the home and school environment, investigate the incentives, the rationales and the conditions these patterns of communication stem from, as well as the participants’ attitude towards Albanian. Results revealed that L1 transmission is problematic for the Late Bilinguals’ group, while the possibility of non-acquisition of Albanian remains a reality for the participants who were born in Greece or came to Greece in infancy. The home context is normally the only domain where Albanian is used in fragmented patterns of communication. Findings also revealed signs of language shift for these young immigrants despite their claims for the use of Albanian that stem from symbolic reasons.

Abstract
The present study investigates the issue of individual bilingualism of second-generation Albanian, immigrants in Greece. The linguistic impact of migration and the phenomena of language maintenance and shift are investigated, based on the example of Albanian immigrant, primary school students in Greece.
In this article one of the research methods of the study is presented, the method of linguistic biographies. The aim of this method is to obtain information that will help us elucidate how the participants learned both languages as well as when, where, why and with whom they use them.

Περίληψη

H πιθανότητα ότι η γλώσσα μπορεί να προκαλέσει εμπόδια στον πολιτισμικά και γλωσσικά διαφορετικό μαθητή κατά την επιδίωξη της πλήρους και αποτελεσματικής συμμετοχής του σε εκπαιδευτικές ευκαιρίες αποτελεί μια σκληρή πραγματικότητα στις παγκοσμιοποιημένες κοινωνίες. Το άρθρο πραγματεύεται τις επιπτώσεις της επαφής μεταξύ της αλβανικής και της ελληνικής γλώσσας στο γλωσσικό ρεπερτόριο των δίγλωσσων Αλβανών παιδιών, στο πλαίσιο της μετανάστευσης και εστιάζοντας στην παιδική ατομική διγλωσσία. Συγκεκριμένα, ασχολείται με τα στοιχεία που προκύπτουν από τα ευρήματα που βασίζονται στις γλωσσικές βιογραφίες των συμμετεχόντων σε σχέση με τις γλωσσικές τους επιλογές και τη χρήση των γλωσσών τους. Το άρθρο καταλήγει σε συμπεράσματα και εισηγήσεις για την πληρέστερη κατανόηση των θεμάτων που σχετίζονται με την ατομική διγλωσσία, ώστε να μετριαστούν τα πιθανά εμπόδια κατά την ένταξη των γλωσσικά/πολιτισμικά διαφορετικών μαθητών στην κοινωνία υποδοχής.

Περίληψη

Η κακή σχολική επίδοση μπορεί να ερμηνευθεί ως συνέπεια της κοινωνικής ανισότητας και της αναπαραγωγής της από το σχολείο και τους εκπαιδευτικούς, όπως υποστηρίζεται στην σχετική βιβλιογραφία. Αυτό αποδεικνύεται εν μέρει από την έρευνα που ακολουθεί, η οποία διερευνά μία πλευρά του θέματος: τις αιτίες χαμηλής σχολικής επίδοσης των «πολιτισμικά διαφορετικών» μαθητών .

Summary

Low academic performance can be interpreted as a consequence of social discrimination and its reproduction by school and educators, as it is shown in the relevant bibliography. Τhis is partly demonstrated by the case study that follows, which investigates one aspect of the topic: the reasons for low academic performance of “culturally diverse” students.
