“Languages unite!” Celebrate the European Day of Languages with ECML!

Information from the

European Language Gazette
No. 76 – EDL edition 2026

A special year deserves a special celebration! The 26th edition of the European Day of Languages takes place on 26 September 2026, giving us plenty of “26s” to celebrate. With the official date falling on a Saturday, language-themed events are already starting next week and will continue well into the following one, offering a vibrant, Europe-wide celebration of linguistic diversity and the joy of learning languages.

This year’s motto, “Languages unite!”, highlights the important role languages play in bringing people together, fostering curiosity about other cultures, and helping to bridge linguistic and cultural divides. For 2026 we are offering a fresh set of creative challenges, new resources, competitions, posters, games as well as a showcase for the events taking place in celebration of languages.

New resources for teachers and learners

A range of new and updated resources is being developed for the European Day of Languages website. These include a Call to action for teacher educators and teachers building on last year’s Motivation Manifesto.

New posters for EDL 2026

Two new downloadable posters are available for this year’s European Day of Languages. The “Things you may not

know about languages” poster series will continue, this time placing the spotlight on sign languages – with special

thanks to the members of the ECML DeafSign project for their invaluable contribution.

The second poster will showcase a selection of amusing idioms from across Europe. Influenced by the summer heat

– and probably also the ups and downs of the World Cup – it explores the many colourful ways in which different

languages express the idea of someone “going a little crazy”. From the countless possibilities available, we have

selected a variety of particularly memorable examples and brought them together under the title “Amusing idioms…

one sandwich short of a picnic”.https://edl.ecml.at/posters

EDL activity kit

An activity kit for the 2026 European Day of Languages, based on a concept developed by Luxembourg’s

Institut National des Langues. This practical kit is bursting with ideas for activities to use for this year’s EDL

– no teacher should be without one!

Word of the year

This feature showcases words from a variety of languages that have been designated as “words of the year” by

publishers and other media channels in different European countries. These tend to reflect key events or changes

(both positive and negative) which have occurred over the past year.Visitors to the site will also be invited to propose

their “Word of the year” for 2026.

Name it! – The language proficiency game

Give your vocabulary a quick workout! Test your vocabulary, challenge your memory, and explore words

across multiple languages. A fun and simple way to refresh and expand your everyday language skills.

Choose a category, select the language you want to explore, and see if you can remember the word

before time runs out. After a few seconds, the correct expression appears – You can however beat the

clock by clicking on the image and pausing the timer so that you can continue at your own pace

Linguine – The language board game

https://edl.ecml.at/edlboardgame

“Linguine” is a fun and educational board game that invites players to explore Europe’s rich linguistic and

cultural diversity. Based on feedback from users, the game has been enhanced and the 'MKII' Linguine is now

available in both ‘beginner’ and ‘advanced’ versions, offering an even wider range of questions and challenges

Language games and resources

A rich palette of language games is also available. Try out some of the following:

  • a brain game to test out your skills and your memory with the Latin and Greek alphabets – https://edl.ecml.at/braingame;
  • “How many languages do you recognize?”, where you can test your ability to correctly identify
  • written texts in up to 40 languages – https://edl.ecml.at/languagedetective;
  • a “Where am I?” game, where you need to identify which country is represented in a picture
  • – from the linguistic clues visible – https://edl.ecml.at/WhereAmI;
  • the “Which language is it?” game which tests the listener’s ability to identify individual languages
  • through listening to conversations in an everyday setting. This game really certainly sharpens
  • listening skills            – https://edl.ecml.at/whichlanguage;
  • an updated “Famous quotes” section: including a variety of quotations from different languages
  •  and their origins – https://edl.ecml.at/quotes.

Motivation and language teacher education: a Call to action

Every language-learning journey begins with motivation. The Call to action, developed by a joint ECML

-European Commission working group, explores why motivation matters for language teachers and

language teacher education and calls for renewed action in this area. The full text will be launched during

a dedicated webinar on 22 September. Discover more below:

EDL Initiatives: how to get involved!

The 2026 EDL class language challenge initiative

Invite your class to complete a series of short, fun language missions and join thousands of students

across Europe in celebrating linguistic diversity. By submitting a simple piece of evidence, your class will

receive an official EDL Challenge Certificate.

In 2026, we aim to make the initiative bigger than ever by encouraging as many students as possible to

take part at the same time – potentially setting a new record for the largest language challenge ever

organised. The activity can be carried out using the “Create your own language challenge” tool.

Are you ready to take on the EDL 2026 Language Challenge?

“Languages unite!” poster initiative

Schools and learners are invited to create a poster illustrating the theme “Languages unite!”.

Posters can use artwork, symbols and quotations to illustrate how languages bring people together

and help reach across linguistic and cultural divides. The most creative entries will receive prizes,

and 25 selected posters will proudly decorate the walls of the European Centre for Modern Languages.

promoting the Day. Activities and initiatives will be shared using the hashtags #coeEDL, #EDL26, #EDL2026 and #EDLLanguagesunite. A wide range of images, banners and logos is also available in the

Downloads section of the EDL website.

All about EDL events!

The European Day of Languages offers an opportunity to raise awareness of all the languages represented in

today’s Europe. It is a celebration of Europe’s unique linguistic context and an impetus for people of all ages and

walks of life to also learn to communicate, (and be understood!) in a language in addition to their own.

Around the Day thousands of events take place, often dealing with very different topics and audiences but with

the same inherent premise – to encourage language learning.

EDL events calendar

We warmly welcome event organisers to enter details of their activities from all around Europe and

indeed the world into the EDL calendar – https://edl.ecml.at/edlcalendar. By doing so, they will also

be able to download an official event certificate.

Each day, throughout the month of September, a particularly special event will be showcased on the

homepage of the EDL website – https://edl.ecml.at.

Virtual event of the European Commission

The European Commission will be celebrating the European Day of Languages with a virtual event on

30 September – and you are invited! This year’s theme will be “Languages unite! How languages

shape inclusion”.

Register now to get access to the virtual exhibition and join the debate on how multilingualism can

empower learners, strengthen democracy and contribute to inclusion.

You will be able to create your own avatar and explore virtual stands (including the ECML’s!) on language

learning and teaching, interpretation, translation, and beyond.

Check out the website for the full programme.

Graz language festival

On 25 September 2026, the Graz language festival will celebrate the European Day of Languages,

highlighting the city’s linguistic diversity as well as 25 years of Graz as a City of Human Rights. From

9 am to 6 pm, visitors can take part in workshops and interactive activity stalls, go on language-themed

city walks and enjoy a wide range of artistic performances.

The event will also be streamed via the page: https://sprachennetzwerkgraz.at/Grazer-Sprachenfest.

New storybooks

We are pleased to announce a new series of children’s books inspired by the European Day of Languages.

The bilingual Croatian-English storybooks "Dabar Joža" (Joe the Beaver) are written by Ljiljana Kolar,

Croatia’s National Relay for the European Day of Languages, together with her colleague Andreja Mrazović.

Through the adventures of a friendly beaver, young readers explore local heritage, nature, traditions and

cultural landmarks, while developing a love of reading and an interest in learning English. In Croatia,

the stories are complemented by educational workshops, school visits and a range of learning materials

tailored to primary school children, helping to bring the books and their themes to life in engaging and

interactive ways.

Stop Violence PNGs by Vecteezy

    Πώς ένιωσα όταν διαφώνησα χωρίς να επιτεθώ;

2.       Role Playing – «Μπες στη θέση μου»

       • Παρουσιάζονται σενάρια σχολικής βίας (λεκτική, διαδικτυακή, κοινωνικός αποκλεισμός).

      • Οι μαθητές αλλάζουν ρόλους: θύτης, θύμα, παρατηρητής.

      •       Συζήτηση: ποιος έχει δύναμη να σταματήσει τη βία;

Πώς πιστεύεις ότι νιώθει αυτό το άτομο;

Είναι απλώς «αγνόηση» ή μορφή βίας;

Τι μπορεί να κάνει ένας παρατηρητής;

  • Είναι αστείο ή βία;
  • Ποιος έχει δύναμη σε αυτή την κατάσταση;
  • Πώς μπορεί να σταματήσει αυτό;

Ποιος έχει ευθύνη: το πρότυπο, οι μαθητές ή και οι δύο;

Γιατί οι άνθρωποι αντιγράφουν τέτοιες συμπεριφορές;

Τι είδους πρότυπα χρειαζόμαστε;

4. Cyberbullying

  • Wonder
  • Dead Poets Society
  • Freedom Writers

  • Ποιος είναι “θεατής” της βίας;
  • Τι θα μπορούσε να αλλάξει την έκβαση;

Slam Poetry – «Δεν ήταν αστείο»

Και εσύ;

·         Πώς θα ορίζατε την ελευθερία του λόγου;

·         Η ελευθερία του λόγου σημαίνει ότι μπορούμε να πούμε ό,τι θέλουμε;

·         Εάν πιστεύετε ότι δεν πρέπει να επιτρέπονται ορισμένες «εκφράσεις», πώς αποφασίζουμε τι πρέπει να απαγορευτεί; Ποιος πρέπει να αποφασίσει;

·         Έχετε αντιταχθεί ποτέ σε κάποιον που νιώθατε ότι ασκούσε ρητορική μίσους;

·         Πώς σας έκανε να νιώσετε;

·         Ποιο ήταν το αποτέλεσμα της δράσης σας;

Ελληνικό, σύντομο και ξεκάθαρο μήνυμα ενάντια στον σχολικό εκφοβισμό. Έχει χρήση στην τάξη για συζήτηση και ευαισθητοποίηση. Ιδανικό για δημιουργία αναστοχασμού στην τάξη: Τι μπορεί να κάνει ένας μαθητής όταν βλέπει εκφοβισμό;

    π.χ., Τι είναι bullying; Τι νιώθει ο θύμα; Τι μπορείς να κάνεις;

  • Συζήτηση: Τι θα μπορούσε να αλλάξει την τελική έκβαση;

Slam Poetry – “It Wasn’t a Joke”

You said it was a joke.

But I didn’t laugh.

It was just another word
that stayed on me
all day.

You didn’t hit me.
I know.

But every morning
I walked into school
a little smaller.

And you?
You are not strong.

Strong is the one
who sees
and says “stop.”

Who stands next to me.

Who doesn’t laugh
when someone breaks.
